Teamwork makes the stream work.

Roku is changing how the world watches TV

Roku is the #1 TV streaming platform in the US, and we’ve set our sights on powering every television in the world. Roku pioneered streaming to the TV. Our mission is to be the TV streaming platform that connects the entire TV ecosystem. We connect consumers to the content they love, enable content publishers to build and monetize large audiences, and provide advertisers unique capabilities to engage consumers.

From your first day at Roku, you’ll make a valuable — and valued — contribution. We’re a fast-growing public company where no one is a bystander. We offer you the opportunity to delight millions of TV streamers around the world while gaining meaningful experience across a variety of disciplines.

About the Role

Roku, Inc. is seeking an experienced attorney to join its legal team. This position, based in Roku's Santa Monica, San Jose, or NY office, will provide legal support to Roku's Account Acquisition and International groups, with an emphasis on our worldwide Roku TV, audio and other licensing programs, and our retail and distribution relationships. The ideal candidate in this position will have the opportunity to help lead and execute commercial licensing agreements with key Roku partners, from providing strategic business advice, to structuring, drafting and negotiating contracts. The position will report to the VP, Business and Legal Affairs.

The successful candidate for this role has a demonstrated passion for new technology, entertainment and digital content. You are excited about Roku. You have a strong desire to be involved in the full life cycle of the negotiation process. You are self-motivated, well-organized and detail-oriented, with a proven ability to draft customized technology and commercial agreements; and handle multiple, time-sensitive and complex matters simultaneously, independently and with minimal supervision. This is an amazing opportunity to play a key role in supporting the company's rapid growth.

The work we do can be challenging, but that's why we enjoy it so much. The ideal candidate isn't a bystander. They are curious and engaged, willing to jump in to solve problems and make data-driven decisions even when things feel very ambiguous. Our industry changes quickly, so we expect a great candidate to be comfortable responding quickly to changing business needs, knowing that their own success comes when the team succeeds.

What you'll be doing

  • Draft and negotiate technology licensing and distribution agreements with our consumer electronic and service provider partners
  • Draft and negotiate retail and distribution arrangements, domestic and international
  • Provide business and legal counsel in support of Roku's broader strategies
  • Partner with sales, operations and engineering teams on the productization and commercialization of products and programs to support Roku's growth by providing legal advice on a range of issues arising from the development of new products and features in Roku TV and other device programs, including the expansion of these programs to new partners and new countries
  • Act as a subject matter expert on issues related to Roku's licensing programs and retail distribution relationships, including key commercial terms and conditions, intellectual property considerations, management of third party intellectual property risks, export/import compliance, tax structuring, product advertising, marketing and promotion
  • Support and improve scalability and consistency in various programs across countries and partners
  • Communicate with executive management and manage outside counsel
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, both within and outside of the Legal department, to support Roku's platform and product development efforts

We're excited if you have

  • At least 7-10 years of transactional legal experience at a law firm and/or a corporate legal department with an emphasis on drafting and negotiating licensing and technology transactions
  • Prior experience with intellectual property, patent infringement claims, data privacy and security issues in the context of technology and digital media transactions
  • Can see the "big picture" and translate strategy into practical advice. Comfortable with ambiguity in an evolving company
  • Ability to dynamically assess risk and determine priorities based on the changing needs of the business, and to provide practical solutions
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-department, cross-functional role, exercising leadership as needed to create legal structures for new initiatives
  • Ability to think clearly and succinctly articulate a negotiating position, as well as to draft contracts in clear, concise language
  • Bachelor's degree and a Juris Doctorate degree from a U.S. accredited law school
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of California or New York

The Roku Culture

Roku is a great place for people who want to work in a fast-paced environment where everyone is focused on the company's success rather than their own. We try to surround ourselves with people who are great at their jobs, who are easy to work with, and who keep their egos in check. We appreciate a sense of humor. We believe a fewer number of very talented folks can do more for less cost than a larger number of less talented teams. We’re independent thinkers with big ideas who act boldly, move fast and accomplish extraordinary things through collaboration and trust. In short, at Roku you'll be part of a company that's changing how the world watches TV.

We have a unique culture that we are proud of. We think of ourselves primarily as problem-solvers, which itself is a two-part idea. We come up with the solution, but the solution isn't real until it is built and delivered to the customer. That penchant for action gives us a pragmatic approach to innovation, one that has served us well since 2002.
