Roku is changing how the world watches TV
Roku is the #1 TV streaming platform in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and we've set our sights on powering every television in the world. Roku pioneered streaming to the TV. Our mission is to be the TV streaming platform that connects the entire TV ecosystem. We connect consumers to the content they love, enable content publishers to build and monetize large audiences, and provide advertisers unique capabilities to engage consumers.
From your first day at Roku, you'll make a valuable - and valued - contribution. We're a fast-growing public company where no one is a bystander. We offer you the opportunity to delight millions of TV streamers around the world while gaining meaningful experience across a variety of disciplines.
About the team
We are looking for a talented, senior-level PQ algorithm engineer with a strong software background and hands-on experience in AI / deep learning to join Roku's TV Platform Picture Quality (PQ) team and drive the next generation of picture quality algorithms. Are you an engineer who enjoys a challenge? Come work on one of the most popular streaming platforms, currently running on one in every three smart TVs sold in North America!
About the role
In this role, you will improve existing and develop new video algorithms for various Roku platforms, blending classical signal processing with AI / deep learning approaches to enhance viewing experience, cost efficiency, and product differentiation. You will work with different SoC / NPU hardware and software components, and design scalable, production-ready solutions.
What you’ll be doing
- Develop innovative video algorithms spanning classical PQ pipeline and AI / deep-learning hybrid approaches
- Design, train, and deploy lightweight neural network models tailored for TV SoC / NPU
- Implement and evaluate algorithms via simulation or real-time setups
- Optimize subjective picture quality and establish objective evaluation metrics
- Investigate system cost-down options while compensating with video processing techniques
- Reverse-engineer competitor solutions at the algorithmic level and apply AI methods to push beyond current limits
- Integrate AI inference engines with the traditional PQ pipeline
- Document algorithms, file patents, and write technical specifications
- Build and demonstrate prototypes of new technologies
We’re excited if you have
- Core experience
- 10+ years of relevant video processing algorithm development experience
- Master's degree in Computer Science / Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other relevant fields
- Experience in SoC- or TCON-based processing preferred
- Technical specialties
- Motion Estimation & Compensation (MEMC): motion vector estimation, frame interpolation, judder/blur handling
- HDR / Tone Mapping: HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, including inverse tone mapping
- Scaler / Super Resolution: classical and AI-based methods
- Noise Reduction: spatial / temporal denoising, compression artifact removal
- Sharpness / Detail Enhancement
- Color Management: WCG, gamut mapping, 3D LUT
- Local Contrast & Backlight Control: local contrast enhancement, local dimming
- AI / deep learning capabilities
- Familiarity with deep learning models (CNN, Transformer, Diffusion) applied to image / video processing: SR, denoising, frame interpolation, restoration, etc.
- Understanding of model compression and edge inference optimization
- Engineering capabilities
- Effective use of AI tools, automation pipeline design, and proficiency in algorithm validation and data processing
- Excel working in a fast-paced, collaborative engineering environment
- Excellent communication skills
- Nice to have
- Publications or patents in image processing or machine learning

The Roku Culture
Roku is a great place for people who want to work in a fast-paced environment where everyone is focused on the company's success rather than their own. We try to surround ourselves with people who are great at their jobs, who are easy to work with, and who keep their egos in check. We appreciate a sense of humor. We believe a fewer number of very talented folks can do more for less cost than a larger number of less talented teams. We're independent thinkers with big ideas who act boldly, move fast and accomplish extraordinary things through collaboration and trust. In short, at Roku you'll be part of a company that's changing how the world watches TV.
We have a unique culture that we are proud of. We think of ourselves primarily as problem-solvers, which itself is a two-part idea. We come up with the solution, but the solution isn't real until it is built and delivered to the customer. That penchant for action gives us a pragmatic approach to innovation, one that has served us well since 2002.
